I am installing a kitchen island 30" base cabinet which will hold a 38x54" piece of grantite. The Granite will overhang on 3 sides by 12" inches. The granite won't be balanced in both directions, so I want to fasten the base cabinet to the floor (plywood, tiled).

I don't have access from underneath. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking a few "L" brackets attached to the cabinet and screwed to the floor, but do I need to hit a floor joist? Should it be ok to drill through the tile and into the plywood subfloor? Should I consider removing a section of tile first, or is it ok to drill right through it? How do I prevent the tile from cracking or do I care?

Install a 2x4 frame that will fit inside the base. This frame can be fastened to the floor - easiest way is to drill through the grout lines and then screw. Hardest part will be finding floor joists as it will be better, but multiple screws into a secure 3/4" thick subfloor will also work.

Once the frame is secure to the floor, place the cabinet around it and screw through the sides of the cabinet into the 2x4. cover the screws with trim ad you are done.

Did you remember to bring electrical up into that island cabinet? It is required, and to be GFI protected.

Thanks jaybee...hitting a floor joist thru a grout line would be very lucky so I am glad to know the plywood floor is enough grab. The installer is coming to measure next week so depending on what he says I may be adding legs in addition to corbels so the tip hazard isn't as great anymore anyway. Is there a good way to firm up the base cabinet frame to support the granite weight? My cabinet is the Typical low-mid range big box store variety with 3/8 inch thick Furniture board cabinet sides.

I had a feeling that was going to be the answer. It is required by building codes, but hey, its your house.

Ask your granite company if they are going to want any plywood on top of the cabinet, and if so, will they install it or are you responsible to do it. Some companies use plywood and some don't (depends on the granite being installed).

At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed at each island counter space with a long dimention of 24 inches (610mm) or greater and a short dimension of 12 inches (305mm) or greater.

The term ( shall ) means can or optional, how is this determined. Because it is superseded by E3801.4.5

E3801.4.5 Receptical oulet location...Says.....
Receptacle outlets shall be located not more than 18 inches (458mm) above the countertop . Receptacle outlets shall not be installed in a face up position in the work surfaces or countertops. Receptacle outlets rendered not readily accessible by appliances fastened in place or appliances occupying dedicated space shall not be considered as these required outlets.
