I am hoping someone can help me with this.... We recently built a home and we have a backsplash that is supposed to be flush with the countertops. However, when it gets cold out and the walls contract we get a gap between the tile and counter and the original grout line has split!!! Any suggestions? I really like the clean lines of the tile meeting the countertop but the gap appears as if we never finished the job.

You have two dissimilar materials touching each other - one of which is installed on an exterior wall. Movement is going to happen. Grout cannot move, expand or contract so the bottom grout line is always going to crack with temperature changes.

You need to use a tube of grout caulk to fill the gap between the tile and the countertop. This is a specialty caulk that has a granulated, grout-like finish. It comes in many colors so find one that is a match to your grout. Home stores will carry a limited supply of a dozen different colors. Tile stores will have a larger selection.
