My wife and I are remodeling our kitchen and keep going back and forth on this topic. Should our island incorporate the stove in it or should is just be a big blank granite counter top? We plan on having stools so that the kids can eat at it. What are the pros vs. cons of having the island with the stove? We were thinking of having the stainless hood with the glass wings above the stove. Thanks,

You should do whatever fits your home, lifestyle, use and budget. We have a large island that is just that, with storage drawers under and seating on one side. It works so well as a prep center, baking & mixing area, grocery parking (till they are put away) and just a nice big open area to work on anything. So I am glad to have a gas range against the wall, and not in the island. Nor a big vent hood blocking views. Also consider the future replacement of a cooktop mounted in the island? Manufacturers tend to change sizes and dimensions over the years, and ranges have tended to stay the standard width and slide in and out easily? Just something to consider.

In addition to Conrads observations, consider the age of the kids and how they may use the island. You don't want small kids sitting there when the stove is on - either they could reach across quickly or something could splatter onto them. Also, if the island top may be used by the kids as a homework / drawing area, then it's best if the stove is elsewhere. Other than that, it's totally up to you and what you want in your house. My thoughts exactly. There's almost never enough counter space in a kitchen, an island makes a great prep area, a place to lay out foods during the holidays. A large area for kids to lay out larger projects like poster board. Plus those range hoods with the glass on the sides look cool until you use them for a while and realize how hard and often you have to clean them. joecaption
