I am currently in the middle of a kitchen remodel. I bought all new IKEA cabinets and stainless appliances. However there is one area in the kitchen I'm not quite sure what to do with and wanted some suggestions. I will include a picture attachment. Basically it's enclosed plaster where my basement stairs (which are behind the kitchen) come into the kitchen area. Why the heck anyone would design it like that is beyond me, but it is what it is. Currently they just put a piece of cover panel that matched the old cabinets on both sides and a countertop on top. I was going to just do the same, but thought I would see if anyone had other good ideas first. It is 44 1/4 inches long.

Oh and don't judge the ugly orange countertops and ugly cabinets! Those are the old ones coming down! Wink

i see dinner for the cats on the floor , a cabinet with the micro on it and the edge of an other cabinett meeting at the wall corner and a big hole between the 2. get a cabinet for storing thing on both sides and have a counter top rounded over the empty space and to the other cabinet. this way the cats have their own dining area. i had the same lay out and the dogs love their dining place.

You need to change a lot of things and I think you should first change that orange counter top with some nice laminated counter top.

        j,
So if I understand you correctly, the "cabinet" there is really a box covering part of the basement stairs.

If so, I'd box it out and then build a pantry from the top of it to the ceiling. You could build it as a closet with drywall or build one with cabinets from IKEA.

A floor plan would help and size the plan or any pictures so they don't blow up the board.

I agree with @henrylarry6. You have to change the orange countertop. My suggestion would be to install tiles like in the picture ( http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/...976_1880216208_n.jpg ). Use a tile adhesive to get the job done fast and easy. This video is more explanatory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ_Vu8YsMew.
Tiles make a powerful visual statement. You can choose simple marble or glass tiles. I’m sure it will look amazing.
