On April 22, 2012, James young of "I Hate My Kitchen" used a measuring tool to measure a kitchen. Does anybody kow what it is called? I would like to get something like it. It looked like measuring string attached to an electronic instrument (I assume it was an electronic instrument as it was not visible) that was pulled out like a tape measure. I assume it measured the distance and angle from the instrument.

there are several variants on the system you are referring to. it is a computer reference system usually used by high-end remodellers and stone countertop specialists to convert a space into a 2d or 3d computer representation of the room, warts and all. they output usually in a CAD-file system, which other design tools or fabrication machines will use to automatically place cabinets/appliances/etc or to water-cut stone.

this is not going to be something you pick up at the home center. probably not even on special order. they will be availiable from distributors to the trade, and if you don't have a contractor's license and tax number on file, you don't buy there.

I would expect they start from the $5000 range up to over ten grand, depending on what sort of tricks they use to mark reference points. something using a sweeping laser and a ton of reflectors will be much higher than something with one point measurement where you pull a line out to an area, anchor it, then walk back to the PC and -click- set the measurement.
