My wife and I are disagreeing on the best way to paint kitchen cabinets. We have both a roller and spray painter.
Which is best using a spray painter or foam roller?
Spray will give you a smoother finish but will require a little more set-up to paint. You can get a good finish with a foam roller, but it will not be as smooth as spray.
Since you are planning on painting your kitchen cabinets, you should first wash them well with a solution of TSP and water mixing it according to the instructions on the TSP. Follow this up with a good rinse of fresh water changing it several times, then dry thoroughly. This will remove any residual grease and oil from the cabinet surfaces and give you a clean surface for the paint to adhere.
Others may have additional suggestions.

Spray finish is always smoother, but Purdy brushes do a nice job.
