HELP!!! I just purchased my beautiful granite counter tops in feb. of this year and my husband thought he knew how to install a dishwasher so he did in may. And I started to notice mold in one of the bottom cabinets next to the dishwasher. So I told him there might be a leak. Well guess what there was! So the leak was fixed but now the lower cabinets are growing mold on them fast. (gross) how do I remove the granite without breaking or remove the cabinets to clean and replace??? Help mold is so gross
first off, it's worth spending a little time to see if this is surface mold, or if it's penetrated the material. surface mold can be washed off with a soap/bleach solution and rinsed and fan dried once the problem causing the leaking is fixed.
if those cabinets have scuzwood (sawdust and glue) construction, there is a higher chance the crud is growing through the scuzwood.
only when it's sure you have to replace the cabinets should you think about removing the granite. one, it's heavy. two, it's costly. three, you're not going to match those slabs again. four, if there is a corner on the countertop, there is a (hopefully) invisible seam of epoxy glue that could create stress to chip or break one or both slabs.
so the correct recommendation is to hire the counter guys to remove the countertop. they have done it before and know what NOT to do.
generically, they will cut glue bonds and lift the slab. practically, there is more than that involved in most cases, and they know their stuff.
sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
