I'm planning to completely redo my kitchen and I'm not sure where I should start. I want to tear out some paneling and put up drywall, rip up linoleum and lay either a ceramic or vinyl tile floor and install all new cabinetry. Is there any particular order I should perform these projects? I figure the cabinets come last, but I wasn't really sure as I expect to change the layout of the cabinets and add a breakfast bar or island. So should I do that and then the floors around it?

You are planning a complete kitchen remodel so you need to do a complete tear-out. First remove all your 'stuff' in the cabinets, then appliances, countertops, cabinets, wall surfaces to be replaced and then flooring. Clean things up nicely then start building back.

Plumbing and electrical changes go first, then wall and ceiling repair. For most floors, it works best to run your new flooring across the entire room then install the new cabinetry. Countertops and finally appliances finish things off.

From your post it sounds like you are wanting to do one step at a time - like remove and replace cabinets - before moving on to other areas. Don't even try this project in this way. Get all the old out and then start building back.

yep, this is a "gut" job. get to the subfloor and the studs. since this is a kitchen, there will be things that are not good at all... water damage, kinked pipes, maybe no venting to the drain, electrical that jigs all over like a sick snake, possibly piddled up or rotting subfloor.

do all that stuff first. everything has to be perfect and inspected before you put any of the pretty stuff on.

then the walls.

then the floor.

then the protective material on the floor (cardboard or masonite sheets.)

then cut pieces of scuzwood or cardboard to the size of appliances, and test-set the cabinets. the size of the appliances you bought open the cartons and measure at the widest parts of the sides, etc. don't ask me, just do it

then set the cabinets. then get the countertop. paint, tile, etc. install the appliances. install the lights.

throw the party.
