Toyota Solara Radio CD player
My Solara radio / cd is acting up. While it was in warranty the radio/cd was replaced by the dealership and has worked just fine for about three years. It is now skipping or fading out where you cannot hear anything from speakers and then it will just come back on and maybe be fine for awhile and then do it again. It does it both on the radio and if player CDs. My wife thinks it does it when I turn the steering wheel or touch the brake, but I don't think so (I tried it and it does not always happen when I do those things). I am not at home now but in Florida and the Toyota dealer down here wants $100.00 just to check to see what the issue is or if it is just loose wiring or ? They told me to wait until I got home and tell the dealer there since they installed the second radio/cd under warranty that they should do the check for free. Of course, I am no longer under warranty. I won't be home for another 4 months and it is very irritating to say the least to be listening to a nice Christmas Carol and have it fade out about every 30/40 seconds. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the issue here? Maybe the radio/cd player is just going bad.? Thanks for the help

if you have 6 zillion buttons on the steering wheel, and 2 zillion of them are for the audio, there is a small chance it's the clockspring harness.
otherwise, you have a failing component or overheating on the music unit chassis.
my money is on the chassis, crummy surface-mount solder joints or a failing capacitor. that's a depot repair, alias, put in another rebuilt one at beaucoup hundred bucks.
a good hacking ham operator would open the thing up on the workbench, get out a little tiny tipped temp control soldering iron and the silver solder, and touch up any joints that look grainy. they are the size of lice. I had to do that on an Explorer stereo a decade back. if it didn't work then, without a rework station that costs as much as the radio did, I'd have put in aftermarket, since there was no interconnect necessary with window/security stuff like GM and some of the European automakers do.
