First off, you just don't "screw a can on" to fix it.
If it's low on freon, you have a leak. The leak should be found and repaired. The the system should be evacuated, oil topped off if any was lost. If air has entered the system, the accumulator/drier should be replaced. Then a set of gauges is used when filling, so you get the proper pressures.
NEVER put freon in the system that has a leak sealant in it.
