I would make it a little larger than what is required. More or less "room to grow". I had made an entertainment center and sized the opening to fit the particular television which was popular in the time period. With the new age of digital flat screen televisions I cannot get one that will fit the opening and will have to down size in screen size when the older television "bites the dust".

36" by 60" should be big enough for any flat TV to be hung on a wall. That way you don't have to know what the actual size of the TV is. If you recess the TV into the wall you'll have to add more wall behind the main wall to cover the hole on the other side and to provide support for any needed brackets. Think about mounting the power outlet and antenna cable outlets into the rear wall.
