Hello...
Short version: I'm trying to find out if I can get a wood stain look over paint.

Long Version: The home we just moved into has a few exposed wood beams, but they are painted white. We want the real wood look. I started to strip one of them and found a few layers of other paint underneath. The ridges of the wood grain are so deep that it takes forever to go in there with a brush to get all the paint out. can I just skip the stripping and stain it somehow to look like wood again? Can I also skip the woodgraining tool since the grain already shows through the layers of paint?
Thanks.

You could purchase wood and box in the beams, then apply whatever finish you want.

There is a way you can trick the eye. There is a painting tool that gives a woodgrain look. You start with a light paint color then mix glaze with a darker color. Then run the tool over the wet glaze coat. It is very easy to do. Any reputable paint store should help you choose what you need.

We moved into a home with the same problem. All of the wood beams have been painted white. I took another posters advice and just bought gel stain. It looks great! You can just go right over the paint.

Hi I like your advice sounds pretty short cut to me .But can you explain a bit please .Can I just apply stain right over the paint or are there any steps like sanding and priming before staining .Actually I have painted furniture with lots of carvings, how do I change its color gold [EXISTING] into wood color to match the rest of the furniture.Thanks.
