We have a small entry into the house (tri-level) and a limited budget due to all the remodeling/maintenance projects. With a newly tiled entryway, laminate at both the upper and main level and someday tile at the bottom level, I've decided to replace the mdf treads with pine treads that I have on hand and paint them. Do I need a special paint or is a good quality paint and several coats of poly good enough. I'll probably add runners at some point but I would like it to look nice and crisp until that happens so durability is key. Anyone got a different decorating idea to blend stairs between different flooring types?

I would use Porch and Deck paint. Anything else will not be tough enough to stand up to all the foot traffic that stair treads are designed for. The formula is made by many paint manufacturers so you should be able to walk into Lowes, HD, or most paint stores and get something that will work well.

No form of paint is going to hold up for long on a stair tread or floor. Add the covers asap.

why not just stain the treads,or poly them, and paint the riser's with white acrylic paint. I had my staircase redone recently, have oak treads and them stripped and polyed then had the treads done with white acrylic paint on riser's and they look beautiful. They still look as good today as the day i had them done. Clean and Crisp!!!

I have to agree with Mary; porch and deck paint will do the job. I painted mine six years ago and they still look good.
