My kitchen and family room share 2 long walls, with a stepdown to the family room and a short wall separating the rooms. These walls are now papered with a very dated print. We want to strip the paper and paint the walls. We've talked about painting the kitchen and family room different colors. Ideas on how we can do this with those long shared walls?

With adjoining rooms it is a good idea to use colors in the same palette. One way of handling it is to use different shades from the same chip. So pain the long common wall a medium tone on the chip and take the kitchen walls one or shades lighter and the family room one or two shades darker.

Benjamin Moore paints had a cool idea on their website but I can't find it right now. They used complementary colors and did a checkerboard type of interface where they switched colors along the long wall.

This page offers some color ideas.
