Headboard from oak 3/4 inch flooring Sign In/Join
        posted
My husband and I would like to use oak 3/4 inch flooring to make a king-sized headboard. It will be just over 6 feet wide, but we will decide the height after we purchase the mattress and see what looks best with it, probably 4 feet or so. We plan to install the flooring horizontally. We are unsure whether to just nail the flooring to 3/4 inch plywood; or whether to build a 2x4 frame behind the plywood, which may be too heavy; or whether to build a 2x2 frame to save on weight, but we are unsure if this will provide enough structural strength. Any suggestions or experience to relate?

Thank you for your response. We are using a poplar frame designed to work with memory foam mattresses. It has four legs and we plan to attach the headboard to it with headboard brackets if we can attach them without them showing, or to the wall with a French cleat if plan A does not work.

I did not quite follow your comment about tongue and groove on the sides. The flooring is tongue and groove. We had planned to make the height end on a full board, cut all the ends flush on the sides, and use oak boards to frame the sides and top with the joints mitered.

If you don't have the proper tools to make your own T&G into the frame, you can use the pocket hole system.
Is this a finished flooring or will you have to stain it.?
Use this as a reference to framing and pocket hole joinery.
        On how to..

..Clink on link, look to right and see most popular. Look through them for ideas of framing and adding legs.

Thank you for the link, I will look at it. We are using prefinished hardwood.
