We're looking at moving to the Florida panhandle area next year. I was curious as to the most common type of foundation along the coast. I've always liked the pier type homes due to the structural integrity. We'll be in the hurricane zone but not directly on the beach.

Not sure where you heard that. Piers are fine in most areas, but in FL I think I'd want a full foundation due to the sink holes poping up down there.

If it was piers with full footings along the full lenght of the home that might work.
