Hi I am wanting to put a window in the garage. When they built it they put blue board on the studs and sheathing on the corners and around the doors. would it be find to cut out and frame in the window opening or do I need to put sheathing there first that means taking the siding off.
You do not need sheathing around your window opening but you do need to change the framing and install a header. This means that you may have to remove some siding to add the header adn supporting studs or remove any interior sheathing to add the header from the inside.
Header size depends on window width. A 3' wide rough opening can be spanned by a double 2x6 header, but if you are crowding that 3' width, just go with a double 2x8 and it will definately take the load.
Your going to need two pieces of 2X and a piece of 1/2 plywood or OSB between the two pieces of the header. That will make it the same thickness on the inside and the outside. I feel you do need to add a piece of 1/2 sheathing around where the windows going to go. If you install a new constrution window the nailing flange has to be even with the outside sheathing that's there now. What kind of sidings on there now? If it's vinyl or clapboard it needs to be removed not just cut out in the shape of the hole in the wall.
