Hi all! Looking at my freshly painted bathroom vanities, I realized how hideous the counter tops are. Can't spring for new laminate and tile and granite are definitely out of the budget. Thinking about painting as I can get most of the supplies from a friend.
Ever done this before?? I've seen some recommed a special "granite" look paint that's pretty pricey, and some recommend just using a good oil primer and then a couple colors of latex with a clear coat over it.
Sand the surface and use melamine paint. Use the small, more dense roller and you're in business. It's a '2nd best', inexpensive clean up solution but it certainly works. Talk to your paint store. I saw a friend do it and I followed the example. In these instances, they were solid colors; I have no experience with the granite paints.

I agree with Joe, especially in a bath. Counters are cheap, especially if you can go to a scratch and dent store or reuse store. I bought a 10' countertop for my laundry room for $45 at Lowe's because one corner was bad. I only needed 6', so it worked perfectly. Ran it through the table saw and had lovely counters.
You're going to spend at least that on paint supplies. Monica

1). You state you can't spring (afford)tile and granite. 2). You said you can get most of the supplies from a friend.
Yes counter tops can be found at a very resonable cost and will last a long time. But I've seen many counter tops in bathrooms and kitchens painted with great results and still looking good. Prep work is the answer to long lasting and great looking jobs. Sand the old counter top with an orbital or palm sander after removing all hardware. Wipe down well and use a good grade of primer. Use a good brush and roller for best results. Some day you will be able to afford a new counter top and that's when you can change out the existing one. But in the mean time you can have a nice looking top.

A friend has a ton of the paint and supplies from jobs they do, but they've never painted laminate. Said I could have whatever I wanted though just to get it out of their store house.
The cheapest I've gotten info on counters here is about $300, and since Santa is coming to visit three very good little children this month, buying counters has to wait until late summer. I'm just hoping to make things look a little cleaner until then.
