Code says that I have to have both. Should the crawl space drain go over the foundation drain yes? so the crawlspace drain must go through the block .? I will ask the inspector tomorrow but don't want to appear ignorant . Thanks dc
All that should be needed for a crawlspace drain is a path for water to follow to exit the crawlspace IF a measurable amount of water ever gets in there. Usually it's enough to have one or two exit points through the lower block. This could drain directly on the ground just outside the foundation - any water from here would migrate into the foundation drain withoug being directly connected to it. In reality, it is rare for any amounts of water to appear in the crawlspace. Basically, a crawlspace drain point is good to have but will rarely, if ever be used.
What you don't want to do is to drain from the crawlspace towards the foundation drain in such a wah that any water from the foundation drain could get back into the crawlspace.
A lot would depends on the lay of the land it's self and what type of soil you have. If your house is on a sloop you want want to make sure the drains are on the low side of the house. If the crawl space is to far below finished grade it really needs to be run into a sump pit and pumped out. (It's far better to never have a crawl space that's lower then finished grade) It needs to be back filled with sand to get it above grade and covered with 6 mil. plastic for a vaper barrier before the house gets built. Make sure there's never ever pieces of wood left under the house left behind from the plumbers roughing out the plumbing. It will attract termites.
