Working on installing a walk-in shower in our bathroom. Our house was built in the early 1900s, so we're dealing with plaster walls and lathe. Trying to avoid ripping out the plaster walls, is there a way to do that? Can I install cement board Durock directly over plaster into studs?

If above is not recommended, what is the best detailed process to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Normally I recommend getting rid of all the old plaster and starting over.

        But -

Take a look at the Schluter line of membranes. they have a fairly easy to install wall surface liner that will actually waterproof regular drywall.

Or, if you are gonig to sub out the build of the shower and the tile work (strongly recommended unless you have done this before) they get their recommendations as to what to do with the plaster.

Crazy, we just did that same project!!! We had to tear the tile off the walls and remove the lathe also, then installed the cement backer board to the studs and then put on the tile. Ran into a lot of tile cuts as the wall were not plume because of the age of the house.
