Does anyone have any advise or experience at turning a
fiberglass tub/shower surround into a walk in shower, by cutting the side and adding a walk-in door. Basically cut out half the front of the tub and finishing it in and adding a door and wall to it. That way I don't have to remove the whole one piece surround
and start new. Very limited budget.
Sure. Forget the idea of reusing the tub - all you will do is spend a lot of time and money for something that will never work.
Instead, plan on removing the entire tub and surround and rebuilding it by starting with a pre-made shower pan. That will give you the best bang for the buck.
do not start a plumbing project with limited funds
in plumbing,,,,it is what it is...if you need a new part, buy it now or pay 7x that amount to have me put one in latter..
cut out old stall, using a sawzall
completly demo, be carefull not to hurt/scratch/sheet rock above the surropund
measure where the old drain is...go to a store and find a shower base that has that drain deminsion.
yes....you can get a different drain location pan,,but it costs more
have a plumber install the pan, make sure it is set in wet concrete/mortar...THAT IS IMPORTANT>>>
buy r19 insulation,,,stuff behind the panels before you put them up...the joints in the shower..100% siliconeThis message has been edited. Last edited by: Frodo,
Thanks for the input just wanted another point of view before
I make my final choice.
if you try and cut and refiberglass the old shower..unless your a pro at fiberglassing it gonna be a heck of a mess, then after it is fiberglassed, your going to have to have it coated...painted...dont try it..really,,no!
