We are having tile shower installed. I know the shower pan was done right. However, my questions is regarding the shower wall. The installer is nailing dura rock to the studs and then going to tile to it and seal it. However, I have read that many suggest adding a plastic vapor barrier before putting up the dura rock? Is this neccessary? Do I need to have the paint the dura rock with a water proofing substance prior to placing the tile?

You will either have to install a liner on the walls behind the Durock (30 lb felt will work fine) or coat the outside surface of the Durock with a 100% waterproof membrane. Orange Kerdi will also work very well.

Without the above, the show will eventually leak. Neither tile, or grout or Durock completely repels water. Eventually all will soak all the water they can and it will pass through to the walls beyond.
