        Am replacing an old acrylic bath tub and surround with just another bath and tiling surrounding walls, when putting in the new bathtub am I supposed to put something underneath to stop the acrylic from cracking etc?? First time doing this, HELP!

        If you check the install instructions on the tub, it should address this. Depending on the tub and how strong it is you could do nothing or you could pour a mortar bed to support the tub bottom. I've also added support by using expandable foam, but this needs to be done carefully so as to not buckle the tub bottom upwards as the foam cures and expands.

        Again, best way is to check the tub install instructions and see what is recommended for the tub you have.

        For overall 'feel' I would prefer a cast iron tub. Big downside is that it will me much more difficult to install a cast iron tub as a remodel (because of the weight). A cast iron will probably cost more too.

        But - no flexing or bounce with cast iron.
