We bought a house about 7 months ago and have noticed a problem getting worse in our bathroom. There is an area above the shower head on the ceiling where paint is peeling in a circular pattern and there is a yellowish spot in the center - possibly mold.
Around that whole area there is a square outline which indicates work has been done on this area before. Could this be the result of previous shoddy work? What's with the circular pattern?

There's a lot of guessing that could happen, since we're sitting at our pc's and looking at a picture, and don't know the history. Is the area accessible from above that area, have you looked? Is it a bad patch job, a roof leak, a pipe leak, overflow from an attic CH&A system? step one is to find out what's going on. I assume there is an attic above this bathroom. get in there and look around. depending on where your vent stack is, you could have bad flashing around the stack causing leakage. you could have a leaky stack. you could also have a rotten section of roof there. it could be chimney leakage.
it could be the vent fan is exhausted into the attic, so it all turns to water and drops there on the ceiling. you could have no attic ventilation, so bypass air from the house full of moisture that comes up in every sill penetration for electric wires pushes up that water, and it condenses and falls right there.
if you're in the south, it could be the drip pan from an air conditioning unit in the attic is overflowing or leaking there. and that is the dayamn worst place to put one, by the way.
empty the closet, get up in the attic, step only on the framing lumber, get over to the shower area, and look around for trouble. it's surely there. and it needs to be fixed, not papered over.

Agreed, you've got a leak of some kind going in there - although a slow one. If it has been patched then looks like they fixed the damage but not the cause.
As others have already said, no other way than to get up there and see what's going on. Roof leak, condensation leak, plumbing leak whatever, find that first.

yep...its a leak you did not say if its a 2 story or not? is there a bathroom above this bath? or it could be a roof leak. more info please
circle pattern is the stain from a pool of water sitting on the sheet rock. poke a hole in the center of circle. water will drain out
a leak can be very tiny. over time, if water does not evaperate faster than it builds up [leaks] it will form a pool. then..when the area gets heavy enough. usually about 2 am maybe as late as 3 am the whole thing comes crashing down. scaring the cat all to heck ! making your hubby jump up and grab his shotgun, in protection mode!!! and you will roll over in bed and say..I told you to fix that leak 6 mths ago. lol This message has been edited.
