Dumb question... when I pull the shower knob on the tub spout to make the water go to the shower head, nothing happens. Any idea how to fix it?

It's a pretty basic system as it's just a simple divertor. It you pull it up yet water still comes out of the tub spout below, then the divertor plug part has probably broken off. No real fix but easy enough to replace the spout with a new one. Probably about a $10 part at any home store.

Not dumb question.
1. Does water supply to the shower if you pull up the lever for 10 seconds? (hold the pull upward)
Gradually builds pressure until active ?

2. Does it have Hot, Cold and Shower control knobs ?
or Does it have Just 1 turnable knob in center which controls both hot and cold mixed ?

3. Does water continue to run from faucet when lever is pulled or does water stop like you shut it off ?

4. Do you hear air burps or glugging while lever is pulled upward ?

Testing..
1. Remove showerhead and be sure isn't clogged.
Use safety pin and\or soak in lime-away for few hours then clean.
1a. Test with showerhead removed.
1b. Use Teflon Tape around threads during install and do not overtighten.

2. Valve or Diverter, there is 2 types so i hear.
Both can become clogged with Calcium, hard water, deposits etc.
Diverter is easy to replace ( faucet, at least hot and cold)
Valve is hard to replace. ( built in single control but still has faucet diverter which could be clogged.)

Maybe the rod you pull up on just came unscrewed from the piece inside the tub spout, check for that. If it is broken, then you need a new tub spout. They make two basic kinds: one unscrews from the pipe sticking out from the wall, the other has a set screw on the bottom side by the wall. You can use a mirror to look for it, then use the appropriate allen wrench to loosen it and then slide it off. It's something you have to play with, because upper end faucets have a combination of both, so it depends on the maker of your brand. So figure out what you have, and what sticks out from the wall, then go buy a replacement part. It's pretty basically simple, and inexpensive.

Finding one that mounts the same way is the idea, otherwise you will have some changing of pipes to do, or other parts to buy, and that will get more difficult.
