I have a dining room table with a cherry veneer top...I want to cut it down to make it smaller....yea that's right....I need to know what kind of saw to use so that the veneer will not split. I think the table is made of cherry with a cherry veneer on top...I only have a circular saw...if there a certain blade to use for that or do I need some other kind of saw? thanks if anyone can help.
Circular saw not the best choice to cut down a peice of furniture. You will want a guide to make sure that you have a straight line, and if you are using a circular saw, a good sharp blade, many teeth (40+) and then cut upside down so the the up-cut of a circular saw will be a down cut on the top of your table reducing the chances for splinters. Again I would really advise against this as your chances for a successful out come with the tools you have are small. That being said- good luck.
You won't know if you can do something if you don't try.
I had a similar challenge cutting down a 7' teak bedroom headboard to one the width of the bed only. As per above posting, I used a skilsaw with a brand new blade. I cut upside down with a clamped straight edge. The results were as good as could be expected. I even sawed off the previous edge treatment and replaced it onto the new raw edge. Undetectable results.
