Over Thanksgiving weekend there was a very simple tool on "Cool Tools". It was a sheet of carbon steel about 4" x 9" and was used in place of a sander or sandpaper to smooth a piece of wood. The first name on the tool was (I am pretty sure) Leo. Two of the big attractions were that it leaves little sawdust and will not muddy light colored wood that is next to dark colored. The example was the back of a guitar which had a light stripe between two dark panels.
Didn't see the show, but this sounds like a card scraper, also sometimes called a cabinet scraper. They are an alternative to sandpaper and are available at Woodcraft and Rockler.

There is no substitute for scrapers in certain situations. The real issue is you need to learn how to sharpen and burnish them. It's a bit of an art but an absolutely necessary skill adjunct.
