Hi,
First, let me say that I am not a woodworker. I would like to build a shelf for my collection of duck decoys. I want it to kinda look like a big tic-tac-toe grid. I bought 6 cedar dog ear fence slats (I thought it would look good and rustic). The question is: I know if I cut pieces out the same width as the boards halfway through that I can slide them together, do I need to reinforce the boards afterward so they do not split? Any ideas for a design? I want something more than just "a box" of squares because the decoys vary in size from 7" up to 15" long and up to almost a foot high. Thanks for any help.

What you are looking for are Shadow Box plans. If you google that, you will get several to choose from.
