Should be able to use steel wool, finer grade 00, or better. Your saw may be developing rust due to damp conditions in your basement perhaps. I have heard that some folks have used car wax on the top. I have an older craftsman, and never had an issue with rust. I do use mine alot, so maybe it never gets the chance to rust.

You can try this to get the rust off...

I use Bostik Tocote to spray on our table saw. It helps prevent rust plus makes your material slide easier across the table.

I use paste wax on all of my tool table tops that get wood slid across them (table saw, outfeed table, router table, etc.) It's similar to the car wax application. You'll need to remove the rust with the steel wool first, but keep up on your paste wax and you won't have to remove rust again and your stock will glide beautifully across your tools.

Jim
Here’s How I remove (surface)rust.
first I use razor blades across the surface.
Next use WD40 and wet and dry sand paper.
then I use 00 steel wool and wd 40. wipe clean, apply car paste wax or as some others said, top coat.
Good luck

Mike

To clean surface coat cast iron with WD-40. Let set for a while. Get a Sotchbrite pad. Place on surface and place a square finish sander on top of pad. Run sander, and pad over cast iron until rust is removed, you may have to repeat this a few times. Wipe off surface to get all the oil off. Wax cast iron with a good furniture wax(I use Johnsons but there are others), three coats, buffing inbetween coats. DO NOT use car wax. Use nothing with silicone in it. Car wax also has abrassives in them and for that reason also they should not be used.

While wax does work well i have used the toolclad cover and love it. There is no problem with rust, and i gives you a great surface in your shop to do other things with.

Toolclad

theres the link above i think that you should try this.
