Help please. We want to make a plant stand from our old porch post. It is square and hollow at each end. Not large enough to reach inside for fastening. Support will need to be attached on the outside. Any suggestions on how to make the base and how large for stability. Should we use shelf brackets turned upside down?
You don't say how deep the hollows at each end are. If they are at least 1 1/2 or 2 inches deep you can cut a piece of wood that will fit inside the hollow. Try to make it a snug fit. You can then screw and glue whatever you choose to use as the top and base through the top into the end of the inner piece. You can then screw through the sides of the post into the inner piece to secure it to the post. The size you need to make the base will be determined by the length of the post. The longer the larger. A good rule of thumb is to make the base about as large as the top is. Trial and error will be your best teacher. good luck and work safe.
