I replaced a battery on 79 transam, while hooking up cables all sudden noticed smoke coming from motor. Checked grounds and all seemed ok. No car will not make any attempt to turn over. Any Ideal what could be the problem. Do you think it is starter or alternator or is wiring bad? Head lights still come on.

Again, old post but I'll chime in.

Probably a fusible link burned due to an incorrect hookup at the battery or something shorting out.

If it won't even crank it's likely the one at the starter.

The cables did get hooked up backwards. What is best way to track down the short now.

there should be a fusable link somewhere, I would just get a trusty volt meter and got to town.
