I want to put up a 2 foot high 8 foot long retaining wall with 6 x 6 timbers. Do I need to stagger the timbers or can I just lay 1 8 ft timber on top of the other?

You can stack them without the stagger but you must make sure that they are securely pinned together. Depending on how much 'push' is going on behind the retaining wall, you may need some buried anchors that run behind the wall.

3 to 4 foot pieces placed perpendicular/occasionally as "dead men" back into the wall can help to anchor a low vertical retaining wall. I made a 2 1/2 foot, pressure treated timber retaining wall 25 years aqo and it is still standing. I am amazed. Wink

just like setting bricks or blocks, I would stagger that wall, and you do absolutely need deadman timber running back into the hill and spiked to downriggers to keep the wall standing.

you also need to put weepers in the bottom with landscape fabric and maybe a little river rock to keep the turgor pressure down from rain.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
