When I teach someone to knit , I start them out with a simple scarf pattern in garter stitch ( knit every row ) using size 8 or 9 knitting needles and worstered weight yarn, then I move them into a scarf pattern using both knit and purl stitches.
Your local yarn store can be a big help as well, check them out. You might want to join a class.

Check our your library, there are tons of books and videos that you can take out for free! I teach a knitting class for kids 3rd thru 5th grade at my church and I have sent the parents there for more resources. There are knitting classes at Joann's or Michael's or your local knitting class. Also check out to see if there is a local knitting group in your area, google search them, and see if you can sit in and learn from them. Sometimes you can get lessons for free!
I taught myself to knit from a book almost 25 years ago, wish I had learned from someone, but with video, it is just as good!
