I have a room which does not have any light in the ceiling. The switch on the wall is meant to control one outlet from which i can connect a floor lamp. I wanted to install fan with lights in that room. I found a wire in the attic above which can give me 120v. Would it be possible to control fan/light only with remote or do i still need main switch on the wall?

You don't need the switch on the wall. Just make sure that wire feed is always 'hot' and not another switch leg (could it be the wire going from the switch to the outlet?). As long as you've got power to the fan/light, the remote control can give you the settings you want.

don't forget if you tap that attic wire (probably hard to do without repulling the down wire to whatever service as there is typically no three-foot slack) that the connection must be in a grounded box, with a cap, with proper termination in wire clamps, and a cover that is accessible. NOT buried in insulation, now or in the future.

Thanks!!! Just what I wanted to hear Smile.
@SWSCHRAD thanks for reminding about slack. You are right there is no slack. What is my option aside from doing 2 junctions.

        thanks again.
