The most common reason is that a breaker is off, possibly power was turned off for some reason or possibly there was an overload or an electrical problem that caused the breaker to trip. If the circuit was gfci protected the gfci may have tripped. Commonly the first outlet in a circuit is a gfci protected outlet. These commonly are square and have two small buttons on them. But the gfci protection can be at the breaker box.
