Wiring ceiling fan and light with separate switches? Sign In/Join

We have 2 separate switches on wall. Each has a black and white wire.

Old ceiling fan and light had 2 (b&w) wires to light portion, and 2 (b&w) wires to fan portion.

New ceiling fan/light only has 3 wires: black, white, and blue (I'm omitting green ground from the discussion). Black wire goes to fan and blue wire goes to light.

Do I tie all the white wires together, and then one switch's black wire to the fan's black wire, and then the other switch's black wire to the light's blue wire?

I'm just not sure about tying all the white wires together, if that is safe.

That will do it. All should be well. You are tying into the circuit an extra neutral [white] but that is no concern. But in the fan box those two whites will be capped with the one fan white wire. {Silly to do that.} So you could use only one of the whites if you can keep track of it to complete the circuit. Electricity flowing in both directions in wiring circuits will actually keep the circuit cool. Odd but true. You will not have that with one white wire not in use. But with the current draw {-2 amps} of either the light or fan this should not be an issue in the real world.

{Top much info dept: Wonder why 14/3 or 12/3 was not placed in the run to begin with. This would have made a neater install. Guess none was to be had at the time.} Big Grin
