I am attempting to install a 30 amp sub panel off an existing 60 amp sub panel which is feed from the 200 amp main. AS soon as a set the 30 amp breaker I immediately get a dead short which trips the 60 amp breaker on the main panel. I have wired the 2nd panel hot to hot, neutral to neutral and ground to ground. I have also attached two images showing the wiring diagrams but I am at a lost as to why it is shorting.
Is the 30amp breaker in your sub panel the main for the sub or is it along the side?
If it is along the side are the contacts on adjacent buses in the breaker panel? Can you post an actual picture of the panel?
Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.
My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
