I am replacing an old, 4ft T12 fixture with a newer T8. Long story short, this is actually a ceiling fixture that has been installed on the wall over a work table. The old fixture has an on/off switch on the side, and I need to replicate that in the new fixture.

The fixture is indeed hardwired, but not connected to a wall switch. Is it possible to add a toggle switch like this one http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gar...5252Foff%252Bswitch# ?

        If so, what type?

This is the fixture I am installing -- http://www.lowes.com/pd_336745...etInfo=$25%20-%20$50

        Thank you for any help!

        That will work.
Open up the fixture so you can get to the wires.
Remove the wire nut where the black lead connects up to the cord.
One side of the switch goes to the cord, other side goes on the other wire.
It does not matter which side of the switch it's connected to.
