I grew up with a dad that did everything. He has remodeled a lot of areas in the home I grew up in along with the little shack we call a cottage. I am interested in "learning" how to remodel myself. I don't live super close to my dad and want to do things on my own. I am looking to remodel my powder room. What do I want to do? Rip up the floor (bad ceramic tile grout is cracked and looks bad). Replace the toilet and the ugly sink. I believe they actually call it a pedestal sink.
As for a budget, not much which is why I want to do by myself. I'm basically asking for a very basic for beginner lesson in how to.
Size of bathroom may be 6x6. Standing in doorway straight ahead is sink and to the right is toilet (door swings in). The toilet paper holder seems to have anchor type screws (the ones that shove through and will open as you screw in). How do I remove that? Also, about how long would this/should this take for a beginner? After I have already picked out new sink, toilet, etc. The demo, put back together, and finished.
Any information is very helpful.
I'd go a little slower before tackling a major remodel like a bathroom. Start by either getting a basic remodeling how-to book or help a knowledgeable friend with their remodel.
What you need to do is to is figure out the small parts first - learn how to remove the butterfly bolts to replace the toilet paper holder, Figure out exactly how the sink is plumed. After you have some experience with these smaller things you can lump them all together for a larger project.
I believe I'd get a book first - There are lots of whole-house basic how-to's out there either at bookstores or at home stores.
Go to a used bookstore and pick up general books on home repair and specific books on plumbing, painting etc. When you need to tackle a project read all the materials you can find. Some books explain better than others. Take some free classes at the local HD.
