I have a friend who needs to remodel some old buildings. One is a 3 story commercial building with a staircase whose incline is very steep and the steps themselves are very small. He's on the fence as to whether to upgrade them so they're more usable or just do away with them altogether. Suggestions?
Probably not going to have any choice here: As a commercial building, code will dictate that they be removed and reconstructed to meet minimum requirements.
depending on the use of the building, there might be different code requirements on support and stringer load. take it to the inspector's office along with the designated use of the building, and go with what they tell you. that way, it's likely to pass inspection and much more likely to not collapse, bringing lawsuits, notoriety, bad Internet mention, etc.
sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
