I would like to install a wood floor in my living room. Because I have a rock fireplace and the rock edges are irregular at the floor installers who quote my project won't install the wood floor to the rock. They are requiring a secondary hearth be placed first that provides a clean line to install the wood floor up to. Any ideas? I attached a photo.

Ideas? Yeah, get some installers who aren't amateurs. While it's a bit tricky and time consuming any 'skilled' installer with a contour gauge and a jig-saw can cut the flooring to fit around the stone of the hearth. I'd shop around for someone else who can do the job you want. Jaybee

I use a piece of 1 X pine and a compass to scribe it in. (works like a tremmel point) Once I get it to fit I transfure the pattern to a piece of matching wood that matches the flooring to make a three sided border for the flooring to butt up againt. joecaption
