I have a leather jacket that has a sewed in lining that has a tear to the front of the leather jacket. I don't want to sew it up and my only other choices are to put a patch on it or try some kind of glue/mend substance I have found.
Any help or other info is greatly needed. Has anyone ever tried or repaired a torn leather jacket?

woodlore,

Is there any way that you can post a picture of the area on the jacket where the tear is located? Is it the leather that has the tear or the lining?

You may have an option or two to repair it depending on where the tear is. If it is in or near the seamline, you stand a better chance of repairing it. If it is elsewhere, it is almost impossible to repair it without it being noticeable.

You may want to consult a local shoe repair shop to see if they have any suggestions. Usually the "old guys" that have been in the business for years and years have the know-how and the equipment to repair, dye and polish any area that has to be fixed.

I have sewn on leather and suede in the past and it isn't an easy task for someone that doesn't have a leather machine or tools. Especially if it is a heavier weight leather or a calf or lambskin.

Good Luck...hope this helps.

You might try going to an auto parts store to see what is available for repairing leather seats. I think a patch from behind would be best.

This will not be invisible for sure.

I know this sounds crazy...but take it to your local Shoe Shop..you will be amazed at what they can do to help or suggest in your repair. They have repaired everything for me from a vintage leather jacket, leather skull cap and even replaced the button on my favorite pair of jeans. I thought all of these were gone forever.
They were suggested by my dry cleaners.

best of luck,
ginger

Thanks for the great suggestions.
I have checked with the auto places and they don't repair leather seats, they only replace them here, nobody does repair.
All we have left here in Jackson,MI as far as shoe stores is about 20 that sell only new ones, nobody repairs them.
It seems that the one's that did repair closed up and went south.
Our economy here is way below the poor rating.
I guess I will try to repair it with the adhesive I bought that says it repairs leather.

Once again,THANKS for the great suggestions.

Is there anyone in your area that does upholstery work, not necessarily on cars, but upholstery work for furniture? They might have enough knowledge and experience to help.

I know of a business that is about 20 miles away that does furniture classes on how to reupholster furniture. I contacted them and they don't repair they replace the whole fabric.

I only have a scanner on my copier and I have tried to get a picture but it doesn't come out. The coat is black and tan colored with the tear in the black.

I'll give it a try and let you know how it comes out.
