Large den but dark. Brick wall and dark panel. One wall has fireplace with brick hearth wall to wall with built in shelves made from dark stained wood. Off white carpet and tan furniture. Need suggestions re painting shelves, walls, brick???? Accent colors I have been using are blues.

I can only suggest that you do some virtual "window shopping". Look at lots of pictures and note what you like. The internet is full of photo galleries. One site you might try is Houzz.com where you can add pictures to your "idea book".

Best thing to do is take some pictures and upload them here.

        Or here.

The people there will be able to give you the info you're looking for. Just look at the existing pictures.

A mirror and some pictures on the wall will make it look perfect. Sometimes a proper lighting matters more than a color of walls.

To make a room lighter, you should paint a room in light shades, but the paint should not be matte. Yes color - light, but it is good to add some metallic to play and reflect more light. My walls were lined with conventional gypsum. And then the walls were covered with wax, which can be colored in any shade.
