painting over chipped paint
I am making some cupboard doors for my wife out of old barn wood. Rather than stripping them down, she wants to retain the look of the old paint. Is there something I can coat the wood with to "preserve" the old paint and keep it from flaking off all over the place? I am planing on gently hitting it with a wirebrush or similar item to knock off the worst of the chipping...Thanks

I would want to clean the boards well, as one never knows what they came in contact with. Then sanding them is not going to rid all the old paint, and you do want to get off any that is just peeling but barely hanging on. (No one I know wants any possible lead base paint chips in their home)

Speaking of lead paint, wear a good mask and do it outdoors over disposable plastic, to minimize any exposure.

I would probably coat it (2-3 coats minimum) with some matte or satin sheen polycrylic. This will make wiping and cleaning the surface easier as well as protecting/sealing it.
