We have a 114 year old home in Ohio and need to paint it. We have cement fiberglass siding that needs clean before we paint. How do we clean it? Have read that we shouldn't use a power washer. The siding is like glass and has chips and cracks in some of the pieces. Can anyone advise or cleaning and what sprayer we should use to do this?
at that age, are you sure that it isn't asbestos/cement siding? that stuff was made well into the 60s.
I'd get one of those carwash brushes that clips onto the garden hose. dip it in a bucket of diluted house wash, scrub, then turn on the water and rub it again to rinse. This message has been edited. Last edited by: swschrad,

I too think it's most likely asbestos cement.
You can power wash it. The reason there are warnings to not pressure wash various types of sidings is that it's all too easy to direct the pressure washer up under the siding overlaps - this forces water behind the siding where it can't easily get out or dry. If you pressure wash from above and don't direct too much into corners it will clean up fine.
