My kitchen, dining room & laundry room walls and cabinets are all that orangey yucky knotty pine stain. It's so dark and I want to either re-stain or paint. I don't mind the knots showing at all. The only thing I want to change is the color. Any advice?
You'll need to paint first with good slick-surface primer to get the paint to stick to the stain/varnish finish on the pine. Don't go with a very light color as the seams between the T&G pine will look like dark cracks. A medium color will hide them more.
If this is sealed with a poly it will all need to be sanded first or the primers not going to be able to bond.
For a far better, smoother look I'd be going over the walls with 1/4 sheetrock.
