Cool Tools Holiday Special , painters pole was used to hang christmas lights on Large tree outside and also on house. What was on the end of the painters pole? It looked like a red hook but what type of hook screws on to a painters pole?

I didn't watch it but maybe it was something like this:

most any REAL neighborhood hardware store has those hooks in the Christmas section, there are several outfits that make them.

you can also take a piece of very stout wire (like #8) and wrap it around the threads, down around the pole, and whip it with a couple layers of duct tape, bend a U-hook on the end, and make do like the Clampetts do.

if there is absolutely no overhead wiring in the area, you can use a few sections of EMT and couplings to do the same thing. you can mash one end flat and bend the U-hook in it. DO NOT EVEN THINK IT if you have overhead wires near your property. or YOU will be blinking and glowing all night long.
