When we moved into our home, the trim was a 70's wood color. We hated it, so attempted to paint it white.....WRONG MOVE. The trim really looks horrible. I would like to take it back to the wood color (maybe even stain it darker) but I think we messed up by using oil based KILZ instead of sanding the finish to paint. Is there anyway to fix that or would it just be better to buy new trim? I also have solid wood doors the same wood color, can I re-stain those as well?

Not sure why the paint messed up. If it was sealed it need to be sanded, and primed then painted. Without a picture it's hard to say what you can do with it. No idea what you mean by "wood color". Before you can stain anything all the old sealer would have to be sanded off or there's no way for the stain to soak in. joecaption

Bite the bullet and your budget and do it right - remove the old trim and install new finished to what you want. Going from a painted finish to a stained and sealed one is next to impossible - especially for trim that is still attached. Certainly not something you could ever hire out as it would cost more to strip and refinish than it would to replace. Jaybee

Thanks guys. I will have to pull off and replace. Thanks for your advice.

If it was mine I would buy the new trim, sand it, clean it off and stain all of it before even cutting it. This way your not getting stain all over the walls. joecaption

10/4...That's exactly what i'll do, AND I think I will keep the old trim to use as a guide to cut the new trim.

Post a picture of what you have now, there's some simple things that may work to make it look even better then it does not. Make sure to cut along all the paint lines before removing the trim. I tap in a putty knife to get it starter then use a trim bar to remove it. A trim bar is a thin, wide pry bar. joecaption
