The previous owners of our home painted all the molding around a set of beautiful floor to ceiling windows in an awful dark red... and because they also never thought anyone else would change it, painted right over the silicone caulking that holds the windows in place. (They also painted over the all the framing on the sliding glass door, but that's a separate issue.) Stripping paint off the molding is not impossible, but the chemicals take the silicone caulking straight off along with the paint. I haven't seen much about this issue... but what I have seen indicates you need to sand the paint off the caulking very very carefully. I'm hoping this isn't the case, because that will entail hours upon hours of work. Any suggestions for a better option?

Use a sharp razor knife and cut the caulking out, then recaulk. Much easier and will give a better end result compared to trying to remove the paint.

BTW, you must have a paintable caulk or a paintable silicon mix as paint will not stick very well to pure silicon caulk.

Why are you trying to remove the paint and not just painting over it?
