I live in a house built in the 50s. I am looking to remodel the hallway, but there are 2 layers of wallpaper on the walls. The first layer looks to be easily removed, but the second layer worries me. It does have a raise pattern feel to it. I am wondering what steps I would take to paint over the second wallpaper?
I know I can peel off the first, but it does leave a dried glue feel on the second. I have read a little about painting over wallpaper, but wasn't sure what I needed to do to take care of the residue left from the layer removed.

Any suggestions would be so helpful

I would try to remove it - rent a wallpaper steamer and see how it does.

The problem with painting wallpaper is that it becomes a crap shoot as to how well it will turn out. The moisture in the paint acts as a wallpaper remover. Not always, but frequently. Add to that is the reality that the paint may go on fine in places and then choose to remove the old wallpaper in others.

Do not under any circumstances paint over this wallpaper. What with the glue, raised pattern and being old, you stand no chance that this will look good.

All your going to do is make it harder to do it right by painting over the wall paper.
